“Measuring Australia’s Water Resources” - Do you have an opinion about our epigram?

Over the last couple of decades members will have received on occasions, a bumper sticker as depicted in the image above.
Our epigram, “Measuring Australia’s Water Resources”,is often seen in the company of our logo and has existed since the 1980’s.
Many hydrographic vehicles, facilities and private vehicles have proudly displayed this sticker over many years.
Does our epigram still cut it – given the varied variety of work that Australian Hydrographers can be involved in or is it still a suitable representation of the core of our professions and the science we undertake?
The AHA Committee has been asked – “Is this still a suitable epigram for our profession?”
As a result of this the membership is asked the following questions:
- Does this phrase still encapsulate the essence of being a Hydrographer in Australia?
- If we need a new phrase – then what?
If you have an opinion on this matter get in touch with a member of the committee to express your opinion.

I can see no substantial reason to change it.

I believe that this is still the ‘core’ of our skills and knowledge. Yes we are good at measuring and monitoring other things - we have been an adaptable profession over the years taking on new challenges in the monitoring sphere, but this has been borne out of our water resource measuring experences and expertise. “Australia’s Water Resources’ aren’t necessarily just our rivers, groundwater and dams - stormwater, sewearge and their byproducts are increasingly being seen as an assett to be utilised in alternative ways - in effect another potential Water Resource for Australia. - Mic

As a description, I think measuring falls a bit short, but can’t offer a better alternative. Something like “assessing” or “quantifying” or “evaluating” describes what we do better I think - these days we go a lot further than simply measuring. None of these words roll off the tongue too well though.
