Frequently Asked Questions

The FAQ links to the left cover many of the questions people ask about being a hydrographer and how to join the Australian Hydrographers Association.

Hydrographers fall into two basic categories:

  • Terrestrial or land based, or
  • Oceanic — Marine.

The Australian Hydrographers Association primarily exists for Terrestrial Hydrographers/Field Hydrologists, though many of its members work in the surface water/oceanographic interface in tidal estuaries and inshore projects and programs.

Depending on who a hydrographer might work for, hydrographers may also be known as:

  • hydrometric technicians,
  • gauging technicians,
  • field hydrologists,
  • water monitoring officers,
  • water assessment officers,
  • environmental officers.
