Hydrographers fall into two basic categories:

Terrestrial or land based, or
-
Oceanic - Marine.
The Australian Hydrographers Association primarily exists for Terrestrial Hydrographers/Field Hydrologists, though many of its memebers work in the surface water/oceanographic interface in tidal estuaries and inshore projects and programs.
Depending on who a hydrographer might work for, hydrographers may also be known as:
