The Australian Hydrographers’ Association encourages its members to undertake learning and training in appropriate courses and training pertaining to hydrography and its related technical disciplines.

Members of the AHA are active participants in the current development of the Hydrography specialistion of the National Water Industry Training Package (NWP07), as well as mentoring trainee and cadet hydrographers within hydrographic organsiations.

The AHA supports the existing Hydrography Certificate IV (provided by OTEN, New South Wales) by sponsoring the Hydrography Certificate ‘First in Course’ Award, presented annually at the OTEN, Western Sydney Institute of TAFE graduation ceremonies

To encourage continued learning and personal development of qualified hydrographers and field hydrologists, the AHA also convenes National Hydrographic Conferences and workshops where participants share their knowledge, learning and hydrographic experiences with their peers through participation as technical paper presenters and hosts of technical field days. Events like these expand the horizons of learning and knowledge of Australian hydrographers and these conferences often attract participation from international hydrographic practitioners and organisations.

Australian National Hydrographic conferences have been convened since the late 1970’s and are generally held on a biennial basis and generally held at various locations around Australia and New Zealand!

The Committee of the Association also considers applications to assist with studies, projects and conference travel grants to participate in work that furthers the objectives of the Association and benefits the learning and understanding of hydrographic practitioners through the preparation, publishing and presentation of technical and scientific papers related to the fields of hydrography and field hydrology.
